The Shakers designed the peg. Not the clothes peg, but the peg that fills up a space to hold things together. They designed a lot of other things, but it's the peg that they're most known for. The Shakers believe that idle hands are the devils playground. Keeping their hands busy seems to bind them with a golden thread to Gods side. It's really pretty simple: The Peg & and God is not so dissimilar from the cup of tea & the Dali Lama, or Beuys & the Fat Corner. Like the sculptural objects in this exhibition, the Peg has been customised to fill a need - physical, metaphysical, psychological.
